"The religion of a man is not the creed he professes but his life - what he acts upon, and knows of life, and his duty in it. A bad man who believes in a creed is no more religious than the good man who does not."- Baden-Powell quoting Carlyle
About the Scouting Organization
Scouting evolved during the early 1900s through the efforts of several men dedicated to bettering youth. Cub Scouts is one of the three traditional membership divisions of the Boy Scouts of America. The purpose of the BSA is to provide an educational program through which boys and young adults can build desirable qualities of character, train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develop personal fitness. Personal fitness includes physical, mental, and emotional fitness. Check out Scouting Info for more information on the Cub Scout program.
The BSA is divided into over 300 councils. The Del-Mar-Va Council, to which Pack 230 belongs, covers Delaware, Maryland, and parts of Virginia. There are 11 districts in the Del-Mar-Va Council. Pack 230 is in the Freedom Trail District which includes the Greenville, DE area.
Local Organization
Every Cub Scout Pack is overseen by a Chartered Organization. Pack 230's Chartered Organization is The Tatnall School. The Chartered Organization "owns" the Pack. It is the originator of the Pack and, as such, provides it guidance throughout the year. Tatnall School is the location of Pack 230's monthly Pack Meetings, annual Pinewood Derby, annual Blue and Gold Banquet, and various other Pack and Den events.
Every Cub Scout Pack is run by a Pack Committee made up of representatives from both the Chartered Organization and the Pack. The Pack Committee is responsible for making overall plans for the Pack, and for taking care of the "business" details that arise from the Pack's activities.
Finally, each Pack has a Cubmaster and several Den leaders who guide the boys through their meetings and activities.
Pack 230 has approximately 45 Cub Scouts divided into 5 Dens, and is about average in size for the District. A new Tiger Den is added each Fall to replace the Webelos Scouts who "cross over" to Boy Scouts in the Spring.
Pack 230 usually meets on the second or third Friday of each month (it's best to click here to see the latest schedule...things do change unexpectedly!) during the school year. Pack meetings are held at 6:00 pm in Tatnall Lower School gym on Barley Mill Road in Greenville. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend every Pack meeting with their sons.
The Pack holds many events throughout the year including the Pinewood Derby, where Scouts race cars they design and construct on Pack 230's computer-timed track. Another annual event, the Blue and Gold Banquet, is held to honor Scouting and is open to each Scout's entire family. Pack campouts are highlights of the Fall and Spring seasons, and are also open to Scouts' families.
Cub Scouting is a family activity and Pack 230 includes the whole family in nearly all of our events. We're continually working to make our pack a great place for boys to grow and have fun.
